Embrace Stories

The Problem, at a Glance

Mental health is a highly taboo topic in Pakistan with patients facing significant stigma and exclusion even from family and friends. The system aims to facilitate access to mental health services, and often handle violent patients in a state of psychosis needing to be restrained, sedated and transported in complete privacy.

Key Features

All our SOPs strictly adhere to international standards, and Saving 9 has built a roster of affiliated clinics, board-certified psychiatrists, and experienced psychologists who scrutinize and endorse all our emergency procedures

Our first responders are trained in psychological first aid, de-escalation and instructed self-defense in close-quarter grappling to ensure they can keep themselves, the patients, and their families safe in case of a violent physical struggle

Our transport vehicle is completely unmarked and incognito, specifically designed to preserve patient privacy discreetly in urban neighborhoods while being fully equipped for any form of psychological or medical emergency

Impact of Pilot

Since 2022, the Embrace ambulance has successfully handled 100+ cases including those that require in-person response with ambulance vehicle and those that required online emergency counselling. The in-person cases are mostly from across urban and rural Islamabad/Rawalpinid, but also include intractity cases from cities such as Lahore, Peshawar and Sialkot. The Embrace team has extensive experience of managing complex cases ranging from patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder to drug induced psychosis and severe mood disorders

Safety Protocols

For every emergency, a consulting psychologist is included in a group call with the family member to extract and formulate a detailed history of the patient’s condition, and make a final decision regarding the need of pickup based on the circumstances. In case the patient needs to be transported, the Embrace team arrives at the destination and the family needs to sign consent forms for both the involuntary pickup, as well as administering any sedatives with input from the consulting psychiatrist at the receiving facility.

Public Launch

Since 2022, Embrace’s crisis intervention wing is now well-established and streamlined. Saving 9 has since early 2024 publicly launched a hotline service, in partnership with several psychiatric counseling services. Embrace now covers crisis intervention, online counseling, discreet facility transport, signposting, on-location therapy for students, and medical assistance.
